In the face of ever-expanding choice, selecting the perfect lampshade for your space can seem almost impossible. In reality, it doesn’t need to be and in this article we'll explore how to choose the right lampshade for your space.
As a bespoke lampshade studio, we help our clients design and create their ideal lighting simply by asking a few thoughtful questions — questions you can use too when deciding on the right shade for your own space.
What is the purpose of the lampshade?

At first glance this may seem like a trick question. After all, the purpose of a light is simply to illuminate a room — isn’t it?
In practice, lighting is about far more than function. It shapes atmosphere and contributes to the overall aesthetic of a space.
For this reason, purpose is always our starting point. Will the lamp exist as an objet d’art, designed to catch the eye and cast a gentle glow? Or is the goal to diffuse light throughout a main living space with a ceiling shade?
Understanding the role the light will play immediately helps guide the choice of shade.
Considering Scale and Proportion when Choosing a Lampshade

Most of our clients are searching for balance within their homes, and the key to achieving this harmony lies in understanding scale and proportion.
For ceiling shades we first consider the height of the ceiling. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the ceiling, the larger the diameter of shade you can choose.
Ceiling height also influences depth. We always advise considering the depth of any embellishments — fringe, feathers or beading — particularly if you live in a modern home where ceilings tend to be lower than those built before the 1940s.
Standing and table lamps are where we can have the most fun. Of course proportion still matters — no one wants a lamp to appear top-heavy or unsteady — but to our mind this is where lampshades can truly become art.
The Impact of Fabric and Texture on a Lampshade

The fabric of a lampshade plays a significant role in how light behaves.
Cotton diffuses light in a relaxed and gentle way, perfect for a calm corner. Silk offers a more refined glow, ideal for those seeking quiet sophistication. Velvet, being heavier and more opaque, softens the light and creates a more dramatic atmosphere.
Each fabric brings its own character, influencing both the light itself and the mood of the room.
Finishing Details
Trims, braids and sculptural elements can transform a simple lampshade into something far more expressive — a statement piece that anchors a space.
In interior design it is often the careful application of these elements that elevates a
beautifully designed room into something truly memorable.
When to Consider Bespoke
Sometimes the perfect lampshade simply isn’t available off the shelf.
In these cases, a bespoke piece allows every element — from scale to fabric and trim — to be carefully considered and created, resulting in a shade that fits its space perfectly.
A Final Thought
Choosing the right lampshade is not simply about lighting a space. It is about balance, atmosphere and personality.
By considering purpose, proportion, materials and those all-important finishing details, it becomes much easier to find — or design — a shade that truly elevates an interior.
