In this article we'll explore why the ornate lampshade is returning to modern interiors.

Interiors have become far more interesting in recent years. As designers and decorators have begun to embrace colour, pattern, texture and — dare we say it — a sense of fun, there has been a welcome shift away from the restraint of minimalism.

This change has allowed lighting to become more artistic and expressive, with the return of embellishments not widely seen in homes since the 1970s.

A History of the Ornate Lampshade

Handcrafted lampshades trace their roots back to wealthy Victorian homes and the advent of the lightbulb. Although electricity was not widely available, those affluent enough to have it needed a way to soften and diffuse the stark light of the Swan and Edison bulbs.

It is incredibly difficult to find surviving examples of fabric Victorian lampshades – most of what we know comes from stately homes now cared for by the National Trust and Heritage charities. These beautifully conserved interiors tell us that (wealthy) Victorians enjoyed layering, drama and opulence and achieved this through the use of velvets, silks and of course passementerie - the technical term for the embellishments enjoying a renaissance.

Evolving the Ornate Lampshade: From Couture to Interior Detail

Handmade silk flowers add a three dimensional element to our emerald and pink silk lampshade.

Many ornate and embellished lampshades available today have their roots in these Victorian styles. Our approach, however, is slightly different. Rather than seeking to recreate Victorian shades we take our inspiration from haute couture.

While we use the same traditional techniques and methods in construction, our designs are inspired less by historic interiors and more by the expressive language of couture. From the sculptural drama of Schiaparelli to the exquisite detailing of Dior and the rich hues of Yves Saint Laurent, fashion offers a compelling source of inspiration.

Just as a couture garment uses layering, texture and ornament to create movement and character, we approach lampshades in much the same way — treating them not simply as functional objects, but as expressive handcrafted pieces within an interior.

How to Style an Ornate Shade

An antique lamp base can add even more character to your shade.

Consider whether your shade is intended to play a supporting or starring role within the space, and style it accordingly. There are no right or wrong answers, as long as the shade feels balanced for the room and the base — or intentionally imbalanced for impact.

For our own creations we often source antique and vintage bases, which we make available to clients as part of the commissioning process. Occasionally, however, instinct tells us that a simple, clean, modern base is needed to allow the shade — and the space — to breathe.

Above all, we advocate listening to your creative instincts. If you find yourself drawn to the world of the embellished lampshade, chances are you already have a strong sense of what will work in your home.

Our Final Thoughts

As interiors continue to move away from minimalism, there is renewed appreciation for pieces that bring texture, personality and a sense of craft into the home.

An ornate lampshade, thoughtfully designed and beautifully made, can offer exactly that — a small but powerful detail that brings warmth, character and a little drama to a space.
