Making YOUR Statement, Your Way

So much of what we see on social media, in magazines, and across broadcast media suggests that making a statement is all about the boldest walls, paired with the brashest fabrics, mixed together with little more than luck and a fair wind.

While that’s one way to make a statement, it’s not your statement. It’s just recreating someone else’s vision—and that’s not what we’re about in 2025!

FIVE TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR OWN STATEMENT

So, if bold and brash isn’t for you, how else might you make your statement—your way? Here's my five tips for making your own statement:

MONOCHROMATIC SCHEMES (aka COLOUR DRENCHING)

Ready to have your mind blown? Monochrome doesn’t mean black and white—it literally means one colour! So, when you hear someone talking about “colour drenching,” you can confidently say they’re using a monochromatic scheme.

Regardless of what you call it, I’m a huge fan. There’s something so impactful about designing a space using tints, shades, and hues of a single colour. In fact, I believe I was colour drenching before it had a zeitgeisty name (and before I knew the real meaning of the word monochromatic).

Colour drenching is a fantastic way to make a statement in any room. And it’s for everyone—whether your style is bold and eye-catching or soft and sophisticated. We recently made and installed cartridge pleat curtains for a client who had colour-drenched her space in the most beautiful champagne tone. Everything—from the curtains to the sofa—was in the same palette. Subtle? Yes. But the impact? Huge.

ACCENT COLOUR SCHEME

An accent colour scheme is another great way to make a statement. It involves choosing a complementary or contrasting colour to your main scheme and highlighting it throughout the room.

You might have a space filled with greys and silvers and decide to break that up with a vibrant pink or a soft, complementary mauve. We recently designed a window treatment for a lovely client who wanted subtle hints of pink picked up throughout her space.

FEATURE WALL

Feature walls allow you to get playful without the overwhelm!

Feature walls have been an interior decorating staple since the 1700s, and it’s easy to see why. They’re a fantastic way to make a statement and share a little about who you are—without overwhelming the entire room (or yourself).

Your feature wall might be wallpapered or painted, or perhaps it takes the form of a media wall. Either way, it’s a great opportunity to inject some personality into your space.

GALLERY WALL

A wall full of prints and artwork.

Now, I love a gallery wall. When I travel, I try to bring back a unique print as a memento—they’re lightweight, easy to pack (even in hand luggage!), and they remind me of my adventures while adding interest to our home.

But if you’re not into prints or random art, maybe a gallery wall could still work for you—by displaying your own photographs. Consider printing them in black and white, sepia, full colour—or a mix of all three!

FABRICS, CURTAINS & WINDOW TREATMENTS

Fabric is your friend when it comes to making YOUR statement. Fabric can quietly compliment the ambience and atmosphere you're creating, or it can be the main feature!

You can go fun and extravagant with swags & tails (I call this the FULL WHAMMY) - a window treatment that is purely for show and impact, or you can opt for quiet sophistication and class - our client pictures on the right demonstrate how you can use the same fabric (albeit in different shades) to achieve two completely different looks!

But don’t stop at curtains—think about cushions and even lampshades! These still seem to be overlooked when people are designing their schemes, yet they’re some of the easiest ways to inject personality into your space. They also give you the chance to "try your statement on for size"—dip your toe into that bold vision before taking the plunge completely.

WHERE DO I START?

You're probably asking yourself 'where do I start'?

The answer is: where ever you feel comfortable.

Maybe you love those wild mythical prints or deep, dark tones but worry you’ll end up hating them. My advice? Introduce them in a room you don’t use often—like a hallway or a study—and see how it evolves from there.

Maybe you’ve been dreaming about curtains or adding soft furnishings to your living or sleeping space but don’t know where to begin (even measuring can feel like a challenge!). In that case, find a local curtain designer and opt into a free consultation. Honestly—we don’t bite! We can help you crystallise your vision and open up a world of fabric joy for you to explore.

My (sage) advice, for what's it's worth, is simply this:

Make your home your own. Lean into what you love, and if you don't know what you love head to fabric shops and departments stores - not necessarily to buy, but to to touch, feel and immerse yourself in colours and textures.

Wander around antique fairs, curio shops and small galleries. Let yourself gravitate towards the things that pique your interest!

For me, curating my home is a lifelong journey - an enduring love affair. I try to buy well and, if I can, avoid buying fast furniture and fast textiles. I choose things that I love, things that last and things that are in some way a little unique to me.

Afterall, there's no one else like you, and your home should be equally unique!
